Practical Energy Savings for Businesses: From No-Cost Actions to Investment

Energy efficiency can reduce operating costs while maintaining the conditions needed for productive work. Begin by reviewing bills and measuring the largest energy users, often heating, cooling and process equipment.

Savings of VND 100 million without investment are a case example; achievable savings depend on the site, operating hours, tariffs and measures implemented. The options below distinguish operational changes from measures requiring expenditure.

Office equipment

Operational actions: switch off equipment when it is not required, use suitable power-management settings, print double-sided and replace unnecessary paper circulation with electronic documents.

Purchasing decisions: select appropriately sized computers, printers and other equipment using their actual energy information and workload. A laptop or a particular printer technology is not automatically the best choice in every application.

Lighting

Clean lamps and diffusers at intervals appropriate to dust conditions; a six-to-twelve-month interval may be suitable in some conditions. Turn off unnecessary general lighting and avoid over-lighting. Keep required emergency, warning and security lighting operational.

Consider efficient replacement lamps and compliant LED exit signs, suitable reflectors, dimming, occupancy controls for intermittently used spaces and scheduled building controls. Evaluate light quality, compatibility and required illumination before replacement.

Heating, ventilation and air conditioning

Reduce unwanted heat gain and air leakage while preserving required ventilation. Match operating schedules to occupancy and choose suitable comfort settings. A setting of 25°C is one example; select the temperature for the actual space and comfort requirements.

Low-cost opportunities include timers, authorized thermostat controls, duct inspection and insulation, clean coils and properly maintained filters. Larger projects may include efficient HVAC equipment, shading, appropriate window film, improved wall and roof insulation, insulated hot-water systems and variable-speed fans matched to demand.

Refrigeration

Arrange stored products to allow airflow and place equipment away from avoidable heat sources while maintaining ventilation around heat-rejection components. Keep coils clean, use suitable defrost control, maintain door seals and investigate unusual noise.

Cold-room access and doors should limit infiltration without compromising safe access or product handling. Do not remove protective curtains or barriers without an engineering assessment.

Compressed air

Match compressor operation to production and assess a smaller supply for genuine off-hours demand. Set pressure to the minimum that reliably meets the process requirement. Use suitable alternatives to compressed air for cleaning where appropriate.

Potential investments include correctly sized receivers, variable-speed equipment and coordinated compressor sequencing. Controls and schedules must reflect the actual demand profile.

Industrial cooling and freezing

Investigate leakage, unsuitable defrost cycles and opportunities to coordinate product batches while maintaining food or process safety. Consider efficient evaporators and condenser fans, variable-speed control, suitable condenser capacity and effective separation of temperature zones.

Solar power and project selection

Solar electricity may be an option after reviewing the load profile, site conditions and applicable connection arrangements. For every measure, estimate cost, expected savings, operating constraints and verification methods before approval. An energy audit helps prioritize the opportunities and compare actual results with the baseline.
