IATF 16949:2016 Transition Consulting

Archive: the 2016–2018 transition. This article explains the original move from ISO/TS 16949:2009 to IATF 16949:2016. The deadlines below have passed and are retained for historical context.

IATF 16949:2016, published by the International Automotive Task Force on 3 October 2016, introduced a revised automotive quality management framework. The fifth edition of the certification rules was expected in November 2016. Confirm the applicable rules for a current assessment.

IATF 16949 transition overview

Key changes introduced in 2016

The structure follows the ISO 9001:2015 framework and terminology, helping organizations integrate automotive requirements with their quality management system.

  • Requirements for safety-related products and processes.
  • Enhanced product traceability.
  • Requirements for products incorporating embedded software.
  • Warranty management, including No Trouble Found (NTF) cases and automotive industry guidance.
  • Integration of selected original equipment manufacturer (OEM) customer-specific requirements.
  • Clearer requirements for supplier management and development throughout the supply chain.
  • Corporate responsibility requirements.

2016–2018 transition timetable

ISO/TS 16949:2009 certificates ceased to be valid after 14 September 2018. Organizations needed to complete a successful transition audit. Transition could take place during a scheduled surveillance or recertification audit, or at a separate audit outside the normal cycle.

Completing transition audits by 1 June 2018 was recommended to allow time to close nonconformities before the final deadline. This was a planning recommendation for that transition period.
