Energy audit at Vinausteel – Vietnam–Australia Steel

This report records the 2022 project. Figures, practices, factory scale and proposals reflect the survey period; they do not establish the factory’s current status.

Company profile at the time of the project

VINAUSTEEL was established in 1994 as a construction steel manufacturing joint venture between Vietnam Industrial Investments (VII) of Australia and Vietnam Steel Corporation (VNSTEEL). The original project report described annual production and supply capacity of 300,000 tonnes, with main products comprising 10–32 mm hot-rolled reinforcing bars and D6/D8 plain wire rod. It reported quality controls under ISO 9001 and conformity with relevant Vietnamese and international product standards.

Measures already implemented

Alongside brand development, the company focused on reducing energy use in production and improving competitiveness in quality and cost. Measures recorded in the original report included:

• Shifting electricity use from peak to off-peak periods.
• Using natural daylight and progressively replacing inefficient lamps.
• Using compressed natural gas (CNG) instead of fuel oil (FO) for billet reheating.
• Maintaining machinery regularly to improve performance and reduce electricity losses from friction, overheating and similar causes.

Repeat energy audits on a three-year cycle helped the company review implementation of earlier measures and identify new opportunities. Continuous improvement and lower energy-related production costs were part of its development approach.

Proposed measures

The audit proposed the following measures:

• Establish an energy management system based on ISO 50001:2018.
• Replace high-pressure mercury lamps with energy-efficient solar-powered LED lights.
