AS 9100 Requirements for Prevention of Counterfeit Parts

Due to potential risks to product suitability in aeronautical, aerospace, or defense applications, the AS 9100 standard has revised its latest edition to include additional, specific requirements. to prevent counterfeit parts.

8.1.4 Prevention of Counterfeit Parts

The organization shall plan, implement, and control processes, appropriate to the organization and the product, to prevent the use of counterfeit or suspected counterfeit goods and their incorporation into the product(s) delivered to them.

NOTE:

Counterfeit prevention procedures to consider:

- Train appropriate people on awareness and prevention of counterfeit parts;

- Apply a monitoring program for obsolete parts;

- Controls to obtain externally supplied products from original or authorized manufacturers, authorized distributors, or other approved sources;

- Requirements to ensure traceability of parts and components to their original or authorized manufacturer;

- Certification and testing methods to detect counterfeit parts;

- Monitor reports of counterfeit parts from external sources; - isolate and report suspected or detected tampered parts.

Counterfeit parts are officially defined as any unauthorized copy, imitation, replacement, or modification that is intentionally misrepresented as being a designated genuine part of the OEM or authorized manufacturer.

As well as the product itself, this definition can also apply to any supporting documentation, for example, factory test certificates or certificates of conformity.

To comply with this requirement - we should do the following:

1. Building a counterfeit prevention process:

Organizations need to develop specific procedures, appropriate to the product and organization, to prevent the use or introduction of counterfeit products. This process should include employee training on counterfeit parts identification and prevention.

2. Apply for an outdated department monitoring program:

This ensures that obsolete parts are used in production, keeping the final product high quality and compliant with standards.

3. Implement supply control measures:

Control measures are in place to ensure that products are sourced only from approved sources, from the original manufacturers or authorized distributors.

4. Ensuring traceability:

Establish requirements to trace and verify the origin of parts and components, especially to the original or authorized manufacturer.

5. Develop verification and testing methods:

Develop verification and testing methods to detect counterfeit parts, ensuring that only genuine components are used in production.

6. Counterfeit parts monitoring and reporting:

Monitor and report counterfeit parts from external sources, and aggressively handle violations.

7. Isolate and report suspected parts:

Isolate and promptly report suspected or detected counterfeit parts, helping to prevent them from being used in production.

Requirement 8.1.4 of AS 9100 is an important step to ensure the quality and safety of aeronautical and aerospace products. By implementing these on-demand counterfeit parts prevention processes and measures, organizations can increase customer trust and maintain a reputable reputation in this competitive industry.
