ISO 9001:2026: key changes and transition guidance

2026-09-28 04:47:31 | Lượt xem: 4 | ISO and quality management

Explore the key changes in ISO 9001:2026 and a practical approach to transitioning your quality management system. ITVC Global supports gap assessment, training and system updates.

ISO 9001:2026 was published on 16 September 2026. For businesses using ISO 9001:2015, transition should start with a gap assessment and a review of the existing system’s effectiveness, followed by updates to the areas actually affected.

What is ISO 9001:2026?

ISO 9001 specifies requirements for a quality management system and can be used by organisations of different sizes and sectors. The system helps a business control its processes, meet customer and relevant statutory requirements, and improve performance.

Why is there a new edition?

The 2026 edition builds on ISO 9001:2015 while updating wording and management approaches for the business environment. Read the official requirements and compare them with actual operations rather than simply changing the edition number in documents.

Points businesses should consider

  • Clearer requirements: support a consistent understanding during implementation and auditing.
  • Leadership: connect responsibility for quality with management activities and process results.
  • Quality culture: encourage participation and the identification and resolution of problems where work takes place.
  • Risks and opportunities: consider them separately, choose suitable action and monitor results instead of only completing assessment tables.
  • Integration: make it easier to operate several management systems together.

When reviewing the new edition, also read the accompanying guidance and explanations to understand the intent of the requirements. Edition information and the main update areas are referenced from the official ISO 9001 page.

Do you need to rebuild the entire system?

Not necessarily. Processes that operate effectively, useful records and suitable controls can continue to be used. Identify the gaps between the updated requirements and current practice, then decide what needs to change.

The review should cover organisational context, interested parties, leadership responsibilities, quality objectives and indicators, risks and opportunities, personnel competence, document control, internal auditing and management review.

An eight-step approach to ISO 9001:2026 transition

  1. Awareness training: help the ISO team and process owners understand the updates, affected areas and evidence to prepare.
  2. Gap assessment: identify requirements that are met, partly met or unmet, and record the available evidence.
  3. Planning: agree actions, responsibilities, resources and deadlines for each gap.
  4. Document updates: revise the necessary procedures, instructions and forms, and remove duplication.
  5. Implementation at the workplace: introduce changes, communicate them to personnel and monitor effectiveness.
  6. Update internal auditor competence: adapt the audit approach and questions to the new requirements.
  7. Internal audit and management review: identify remaining gaps, implement corrective action and assess readiness.
  8. Prepare for the transition assessment: review records, operating evidence and arrangements with the certification body.

When should transition begin?

A business can begin with training and gap assessment, then set a timetable suited to its resources and certification plans. Discuss the transition deadline and requirements applicable to the certificate with the certification body.

Remember: implementation evidence is needed. A new set of forms or replacing “2015” with “2026” in documents is not enough to demonstrate conformity.

How does ITVC Global support businesses?

ITVC provides ISO 9001 transition consulting and training for manufacturing, service and foreign-invested businesses. The support scope is based on the condition of the existing system and the organisation’s needs:

  • Training on updated requirements and gap assessment.
  • Planning, guidance on document revision and implementation across departments.
  • Internal auditor training and support for internal audits and management review.
  • Readiness reviews and support during the transition assessment process.

The approach focuses on the existing system, operating characteristics and problems the business needs to solve. The aim is to connect standard requirements with everyday work and practical results.
