Saving electricity in industrial production

Under Long An Power Company's electricity-saving programme, Ben Luc Power began increasing outreach in March 2014, particularly to industrial customers, a major electricity-consuming group with substantial saving potential.

Ben Luc electricity-saving programme

To achieve energy-saving objectives among industrial customers, Ben Luc Power sent invitation letters, distributed industrial electricity-saving guides and helped customers register demand and load profiles in appendices to their electricity-supply contracts. It also worked with Long An Power Company and the Department of Industry and Trade to promote compliance with the Law on Economical and Efficient Use of Energy.

The CJ Vina Agri case

CJ Vina Agri Co., Ltd. in My Yen, Ben Luc, a producer of livestock, poultry and aquaculture feed, participated in the programme. Plant management explained that many production stages used electricity and other fuels. The company therefore focused on energy management, production efficiency and securing raw-material supplies. It carried out energy audits to identify measures that would reduce production costs.

Metering and production-line management

Energy audits using modern measurement equipment identified opportunities that were then implemented. The company installed meters for individual production lines and assigned staff to monitor grinding, mixing and pelletising performance and specific energy consumption in kWh per tonne of product. Annual saving targets were supported by a programme prioritising lower-cost measures before larger investments, periodic maintenance and employee communication and participation.

Variable-speed fan control

Tran Huy Cuong, Head of the company's Safety and Environment Department, reported that equipment installed from 2001 was beginning to consume more energy. Variable-speed drives were installed on drying-extraction fans in the fish-feed line and extraction fans on shrimp-feed raw-material grinders. Adjusting fan speed matched airflow to demand. The article reported monthly electricity savings of 5–10% from these measures.

Process and lighting upgrades

The company also invested in production technology, including a feed mixer whose capacity increased from 4 to 20 in the original report's stated unit of tonnes/batch/hour, while electricity use increased by only 10%. It replaced high-pressure lamps with compact fluorescent lamps in warehouses and production areas, planned similar changes for other locations and street lighting, and used translucent roofing to reduce daytime lighting demand. The combined measures were reported to save around 12% of monthly energy costs.
