Energy Conversion Factors: Converting to Tonnes of Oil Equivalent (TOE)

To compare energy use at different facilities, energy consumption must be expressed on a common basis: tonnes of oil equivalent (TOE).

The following table illustrates conversion from different energy sources to TOE.

TOE means tonne of oil equivalent and expresses different forms of energy on a common basis. Calculations must distinguish physical unit conversions from factors used for a particular statistical or reporting system.

Calculating total energy in TOE

TOE for each energy type = consumption quantity × the TOE factor for the corresponding unit. Total TOE is the sum for all energy types within the same period and boundary, avoiding double counting.

Why do electricity conversion factors differ?

On a physical energy basis, 1 TOE = 41.868 GJ = 11.63 MWh; therefore, 1 kWh is approximately 0.000085985 TOE. This differs from 0.0001543 in the archived table. Do not mix these two bases in one report; establish the convention required for the calculation.
