Infrared Thermal Imaging: Detecting Hot Spots in Industrial Equipment

Abnormal surface temperatures can be an early sign of electrical or mechanical problems, including poor connections, overheating bearings, friction or damaged insulation. Infrared thermal imaging provides a non-destructive way to investigate these patterns and support preventive maintenance.

Thermal images of industrial equipment

Benefits of thermal imaging

  • Early identification: locate abnormal hot or cold areas for further investigation before an unplanned failure.
  • Inspection during operation: suitable equipment can be assessed under operating conditions where access and safety arrangements permit.
  • Documented evidence: thermal images and temperature information support reporting and comparison over time.
  • Maintenance prioritisation: identify equipment requiring further checks or planned corrective work.
  • Predictive maintenance: build a thermal history to support condition-based decisions.

Typical applications

  • Electrical panels, MCCs, UPS systems, switchboards and substations.
  • Motors, pumps, bearings, gearboxes and conveyor drives.
  • HVAC equipment, pipework and relevant utility systems.
  • Building insulation and moisture-related investigations where suitable.

ITVC's service process

  1. Review the requirement: agree priority areas, equipment and inspection frequency.
  2. Carry out the site survey: use thermal imaging equipment under agreed operating and access conditions.
  3. Analyse thermal patterns: compare relevant temperatures and operating conditions and identify possible causes.
  4. Prepare the report: provide annotated images, locations, temperature information, action priorities and recommendations.
  5. Follow up if requested: repeat measurements and review the effect of corrective work.

Common inspection items

Electrical systems

Inspect accessible connections, busbars, circuit breakers and contactors in MCCs, switchboards, UPS and ATS equipment; relevant transformer surfaces and terminals; and loaded cables and connectors.

Temperature differences must be interpreted in relation to load, comparable equipment, emissivity, reflections and operating conditions. A 15°C temperature difference is not a universal fault or safety threshold.

Mechanical systems and drives

Review accessible motor and pump housings, bearings, conveyor drives, gearboxes and industrial fans for abnormal thermal patterns associated with friction or other operating conditions.

Infrastructure and utilities

Applications can include air-conditioning and ventilation equipment, fire-pump and control equipment, and building insulation or moisture investigations within the agreed inspection scope.

Working with ITVC Global

ITVC offers surveys for individual equipment groups, production lines and periodic maintenance programmes. Reports are designed to be understandable, with annotated images and practical follow-up recommendations.

Thermal imaging indicates surface temperature patterns; findings should be assessed with other equipment information before the cause of a problem is confirmed. Inspection and any subsequent electrical or mechanical work must follow the site's safety procedures.

Send ITVC an equipment list, site location, operating schedule and inspection objective to discuss a suitable scope and quotation.
