Calorific Values of Common Fuels

Reference calorific values of common fuels for assessing boiler energy-saving opportunities.

Calorific value expresses the heat released by burning one unit of fuel. When comparing fuels or preparing an energy balance, use a consistent calorific-value basis and consistent units.

Useful unit relationships

1 kWh = 3.6 MJ = 3,600 kJ.
1 MJ = 1,000 kJ; 1 GJ = 1,000 MJ.
On the conventional energy basis, 1 TOE = 41.868 GJ = 11.63 MWh.
TOE is a conventional energy unit. Do not assume that every physical tonne of fuel oil is exactly 1 TOE.

Applying the information in an energy audit

Before calculating, identify the fuel type, moisture content, calorific-value basis, mass or volume unit and measurement conditions. Where fuel quality varies, prioritise analysis results or supplier records relevant to the calculation period.
