Reference CO₂ emission factors for calculating emissions and preparing energy audit reports.

Emission factors convert energy consumption into the corresponding quantity of CO₂. The table below summarises selected default factors by fuel type. Select a method and factor source appropriate to the purpose of the calculation.

Read the units correctly before calculating

The emission factors in the table are expressed in kg CO₂/TJ.
1 TJ = 1,000 GJ = 1,000,000 MJ = 1,000,000,000,000 J.
CO₂ emissions (kg) = energy consumed (TJ) × emission factor (kg CO₂/TJ).
Divide kg CO₂ by 1,000 to obtain tonnes of CO₂.

Worked conversion example

Using 10 TJ of natural gas and the factor of 56,100 kg CO₂/TJ in the table gives 561,000 kg, or 561 tonnes of CO₂. This is an arithmetic example, not the emissions data of a particular company.

Points to check when using the table

A fuel combustion factor does not replace a grid electricity emission factor. If fuel consumption is measured by mass or volume, first convert it to energy using an appropriate calorific value. CO₂ is also different from the total CO₂ equivalent of all greenhouse gases.
