Why must AIAG & VDA FMEA be issued?

AIAG & VDA FMEA is a handbook on failure modeling and impact analysis - jointly compiled and issued by two organizations, VDA QMC (Germany) and AIAG (USA).

Currently, suppliers supplying the automotive industry supply chain are supplying components to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and manufacturers where the end product is not a complete automobile ( Non-OEMs) are required to perform a failure modeling assessment and failure impact analysis (FMEA) of the product differently, based on a scoring table of severity. Occurrence and Detection are stated in the VDA and AIAG FMEA manuals (2 separate documents). The differences in guidance in these two documents confuse and add complexity to suppliers' product development and improvement activities.

Given the above situation, it is crucial to issue a common document to guide how to establish FMEA - it allows suppliers to build a unique and suitable FMEA implementation process based on it combined with a suite of related methods and tools to produce robust, accurate, and complete FMEAs that meet the needs and expectations of any of their customers.
