Why an air conditioner runs without cooling

1. Low refrigerant charge

Low refrigerant charge is one possible cause of poor cooling. Refrigerant can escape through leaks in pipes, joints or connections; lack of maintenance may allow faults to go undetected.

A qualified air-conditioning technician should inspect and test the system with appropriate equipment, repair leaks and verify tightness before charging refrigerant as required.

2. A dirty air conditioner

Dirt on an indoor unit or its filters can restrict airflow and reduce cooling performance, particularly when maintenance has been neglected.

Cleaning the unit and filters can help restore airflow. Follow the manufacturer's instructions and isolate the power before routine filter cleaning. Heavily contaminated coils or components should be cleaned by a technician with suitable equipment.

3. A failed capacitor

A failed capacitor is another possible cause. Prolonged operation and overheating can contribute to component failure; diagnosis should be performed by a qualified technician.

In hot weather, a setting of around 26-27°C may provide a practical starting point. Adjust it for occupants' comfort and actual conditions instead of setting an unnecessarily low temperature.

If the compressor does not run while the indoor fan continues, the system may behave like an ordinary fan. A capacitor fault is one possibility, but the cause must be checked.
