Understanding and applying the six Automotive Core Tools in IATF 16949

1. Course introduction

ITVC Global introduces the course Understanding and applying the six Core Tools in IATF 16949, covering APQP, Control Plan, PPAP, FMEA, MSA and SPC. The course helps automotive personnel understand each tool and apply them together to the organisation's products and processes.

Why use the term “six Core Tools”? Older introductions often referred to five tools because APQP and Control Plan were presented together. AIAG has separated them into two manuals; a current overview should include APQP, Control Plan, PPAP, FMEA, MSA and SPC. Control Plan itself is not a newly invented activity. 2. Course objectives

Participants develop an understanding of each tool and its application in an IATF 16949:2016 quality management system. After the course, participants should be able to:

• Understand the five phases of APQP and apply them to new product-development projects.
• Understand basic statistical concepts.
• Understand error proofing and poka-yoke.
• Apply the individual tools within an IATF 16949 management system.
• Understand FMEA and facilitate a cross-functional team in developing DFMEA and PFMEA.
• Use MSA to evaluate measurement systems.
• Apply SPC, develop control charts including X-bar/R, X-bar/S, median/R, individuals/moving range, p, np, u and c charts, and calculate Cp, Cpk, Pp and Ppk as appropriate.
• Prepare PPAP submissions for customers.
• Develop a Control Plan and link it with the process flow, PFMEA, measurement methods, inspection frequency and reaction plan.

4. Training content

• APQP — Advanced Product Quality Planning Plan activities, assign responsibilities and track product- and process-development milestones to meet customer requirements.
• Control Plan (CP) Define controlled characteristics, measurement methods, sample sizes, frequencies, responsibilities and reactions to abnormal conditions.
• PPAP — Production Part Approval Process Prepare evidence and submissions demonstrating that the product and process meet agreed customer requirements.
• FMEA — Failure Mode and Effects Analysis Identify design and process risks, evaluate action priorities, and define preventive and risk-reduction measures.
• MSA — Measurement Systems Analysis Evaluate measurement-data reliability using appropriate studies, such as repeatability, reproducibility, bias, linearity and stability.
• SPC — Statistical Process Control Monitor variation, use control charts and assess process capability when the necessary analytical conditions are satisfied.
• Practise linking APQP, process flow, PFMEA, Control Plan, MSA, SPC and the PPAP submission through a manufacturing case.
• Exercises, discussion, course review and assessment.
