WHAT CHANGED IN IATF 16949:2016?

Structure and terminology

IATF 16949:2016 follows the high-level structure in ISO Annex SL, the framework used for newly developed and revised management system standards.

Other quality management system requirements

  • Requirements for safety-related parts and processes.
  • Enhanced product traceability requirements to support changes in applicable regulations.
  • Requirements for products incorporating software.
  • Warranty management processes, including No Trouble Found (NTF) cases and the use of automotive industry guidance.
  • Incorporation of some original equipment manufacturers' customer-specific requirements (CSRs).
  • Clarification of sub-tier supplier management and development requirements.
  • Additional requirements concerning organizational responsibility.

THE TRANSITION TO IATF 16949:2016

IATF 16949:2016 was issued on 3 October 2016. Organizations certified to ISO/TS 16949:2009 needed to pass a transition audit; certificates to the previous standard remained valid only until 14 September 2018. The original transition programme offered two approaches:

Option 1: Transition during the existing ISO/TS 16949 audit cycle, for example at the next surveillance or recertification audit.

Option 2: Arrange a transition audit outside the normal surveillance or recertification cycle.

To complete the transition before 14 September 2018, the original guidance recommended targeting completion of transition audits by 1 June 2018, allowing time to close any nonconformities effectively.
