SolarWindow and the 2015 claim of 50 times more solar electricity

Explore SolarWindow electricity-generating windows and the context of the 2015 claim of “50 times more”: a comparison between modelled building-facade output and a rooftop system, not conversion efficiency per square metre.

Information about SolarWindow electricity-generating windows attracted attention in 2015 with a claim of “50 times more” electricity. To interpret this headline correctly, it is necessary to distinguish total electricity generated across a building from the conversion efficiency of an individual pane of glass.

Understanding the 50-times figure: this was the developer's claim based on a model using all four glass facades of a 50-storey building, compared with solar panels on the building's limited roof area. It did not establish that each square metre of glass was 50 times more efficient than conventional photovoltaic panels.

The SolarWindow technology concept

According to information released at the time, the developer was researching electricity-generating coatings for glass and other suitable surfaces. The aim was to use building facades, particularly on buildings with extensive glazing, instead of relying only on rooftop installations.

The announcements referred to operation under direct sunlight, diffuse light and artificial light. This does not mean that the device generates electricity in complete darkness: photovoltaic technology still requires a light source.

How do output, efficiency and payback differ?

  • Efficiency: the proportion of incoming light energy converted into electricity under specified measurement conditions.
  • Output: electricity generated over a period of time, depending on installation area, orientation, shading, solar irradiation and operating conditions.
  • Payback: depends on capital cost, actual output, electricity prices, maintenance and system life.

The approximately one-year payback cited in the 2015 material was a result of the developer's model, not a guarantee for every project. Commercial forecasts and proposed warranty periods should not be treated as proven results at every building.

What should a business check before investing?

  • Test specifications, location-specific output and calculation methods.
  • Light transmission, glass safety, durability and compatibility with the building design.
  • Supply availability, warranty conditions, installation and maintenance providers.
  • An economic assessment that considers risks, replacement costs and alternative solutions.
