Saving energy through building materials

2015-10-15 03:17:39 | Lượt xem: 2902 | Energy and greenhouse gases

An attractive building must also be strong and durable. Building materials are essential to construction quality. As the range of materials expands, energy-efficient materials are an important consideration for building owners.

Energy-efficient building materials can improve indoor comfort and reduce environmental impacts. Some owners are concerned about initial installation costs, but suitable materials can reduce operating costs, particularly household electricity consumption.

1. Solar panels and solar films

Rooftop solar panels can supply all or part of a building's electricity needs, depending on system design and demand. Solar technologies are used in many countries, while suitable solar films and facade products can also make use of wall surfaces to generate electricity.

2. Energy-efficient lighting

LED lighting, once used mainly in restaurants and commercial premises, is now widely used in homes for decoration and general lighting. Suitable LED products can use considerably less energy than conventional lamps, while their low weight can simplify installation. These solutions can reduce electricity consumption while supporting comfortable, good-quality living conditions.

3. Insulation materials

Examples discussed in the original article include concrete blocks and rigid polyurethane foam insulation. Appropriately selected insulation can reduce cooling demand, operating costs and indoor heat gain. Environmental performance depends on manufacture, installation, use and end-of-life treatment; no material should be assumed to have no environmental impact. Demand for better building performance continues to encourage the development of insulation products.
