Roles and responsibilities of an energy manager

An energy manager plays an important role in a business’s energy-efficiency strategy, regularly monitoring operations to identify savings, reduce production costs and improve competitiveness.

1. Roles and duties

Under Clause 2, Article 35 of the Law on Economical and Efficient Use of Energy, an energy manager supports the head of a designated energy-using facility with tasks including:

• Prepare annual and five-year energy-efficiency plans.
• Organise an energy management network and apply an energy management model.
• Implement energy-efficiency measures in line with approved objectives and plans.
• Review and assess implementation of energy-efficiency measures.
• Monitor the energy needs of equipment and entire production lines, including changes associated with new installations, upgrades and repairs.
• Prepare periodic reports as required.
• Organise energy information, awareness, training and instruction.

2. Responsibilities within the facility

The energy manager regularly monitors operations and identifies energy-saving solutions that help reduce production costs and support business performance and competitiveness.

Management may also assign the energy manager to develop the facility’s energy management model and conduct preliminary audits. These identify major energy-consuming areas and saving opportunities, helping prioritise upgrades, improvement ideas and technology investments against annual targets.
