Steps for Implementing ISO 50001

For current projects, consider ISO 50001:2018 with Amendment 1:2024 on climate action changes and applicable requirements.

ISO50001:2018 and its 2024 amendment

ISO 50001 uses the Plan–Do–Check–Act cycle to plan, implement, evaluate and improve energy management. This supports continual improvement and integration with existing management systems. The five implementation stages below explain the original article’s practical approach.

Step 1: Establish an energy policy

The energy policy directs implementation and improvement of the energy management system. It expresses top management’s commitment to applicable legal and other requirements, better energy performance and continual improvement. Review the policy periodically to ensure it remains appropriate.

Step 2: Plan energy management

Planning provides the foundation for the system. Key activities include:

  • Identify applicable energy-related legal and other requirements, including relevant international and national obligations; regional, provincial or sector requirements; and local government requirements.
  • Review energy use to understand the current situation, identify significant energy uses and find improvement opportunities.
  • Establish energy performance indicators (EnPIs) and energy baselines (EnBs) based on the energy review. These provide a basis for assessing changes in energy performance. A baseline is a reference for comparison, not simply a consumption curve.
  • Set objectives, targets and action plans. Define how they will be achieved, including responsibilities, timescales and necessary resources.

Step 3: Implement and operate

Put the system into operation using the outputs of planning. Activities include:

  • Identify training needs, provide training and build awareness among management and employees.
  • Establish internal and external communication relevant to the energy management system.
  • Create and control documented information and records for the energy management system and subsequent management review.
  • Identify and control operations associated with significant energy uses under specified operating conditions.
  • Consider energy performance improvements in design and procurement.

Step 4: Check performance

Evaluate the system’s effectiveness and provide information for management review through the following activities:

  • Monitor, measure and analyse relevant system and process performance against objectives and criteria.
  • Evaluate compliance with applicable legal and other requirements.
  • Conduct internal audits at planned intervals to assess conformity with ISO 50001 and organizational requirements.
  • Identify nonconformities, correct them, address their causes and take proportionate action to prevent recurrence. The original article also referred to preventive action in its earlier management-system terminology.
  • Control records and retain evidence of performance and decisions.

Step 5: Management review

Top management periodically reviews operating data, internal audit results, objectives and targets and determines changes needed to keep the system effective and appropriate.

Guidance supporting ISO 50001 implementation

The original article described supporting documents while they were under development. Published guidance now assists organizations in understanding key concepts and applying them in industrial operations.

The original text used historical project identifiers 17588, 17570 and 17580 for guidance on energy performance indicators, baselines, measurement and verification, significant energy uses and justified baseline changes. It attributed to Joe Almaguer an emphasis on keeping guidance practical for users and continual improvement. Current references include ISO 50006 and ISO 50015.

ISO 50003 addresses the competence and activities of bodies that audit and certify energy management systems, including audit planning, teams, time and reporting.

ISO 50004 provides guidance on implementation, maintenance and improvement, including scope, management responsibility, significant energy uses, improvement opportunities, competence, communication, procedures, monitoring, internal audit, nonconformity, corrective action and management review.
