ISO 50001 Consulting and Training

I. What is ISO 50001?

ISO 50001 is the international standard for an energy management system. It provides requirements for establishing, implementing, maintaining and improving energy performance, and a basis for self-assessment, declarations of conformity or independent certification. Its first edition was published in June 2011.

The first edition appeared in 2011 and the second in 2018. Current implementation should use ISO 50001:2018 together with Amendment 1:2024 on climate action changes.

ISO 50001 follows a continual improvement approach compatible with management systems such as ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, helping organizations integrate energy management with quality and environmental management.

ISO 50001:2018 provides a framework to:

• Establish an energy policy that supports better performance.
• Set objectives and targets consistent with the policy.
• Use data to understand energy use and make informed decisions.
• Measure results.
• Review implementation of the energy policy.
• Continually improve energy management.

II. Energy management standards

ISO50001:2018 — Energy management system requirements and guidance for use.

ISO50002-1:2025 — General requirements and guidance for energy audits.

ISO50003:2021 — Requirements for bodies that audit and certify energy management systems.

The original ISO 50002:2014 and ISO 50003:2014 references have been replaced by the editions above.

III. Benefits of ISO 50001

IV. Who can apply ISO 50001?

ISO 50001 is applicable to organizations of different sizes, activities, ownership types and locations. It does not prescribe a fixed energy-saving target for every organization. Objectives depend on the organization’s circumstances and applicable requirements.

Vietnam’s 2010 energy-efficiency law provides part of the legal context and has since been amended, including by Law 77/2025/QH15. Organizations should identify current obligations for their activities and coordinate energy programmes with relevant quality, cleaner production and environmental management programmes.
