A. Introduction to ISO 45001
The occupational accident situation and the establishment of ISO 45001
More than 7,600 people die every day from work-related accidents or illnesses – resulting in more than 2.78 million deaths per year.
The burden of occupational injury and disease is substantial, and the impact is enormous for employers and the economy, leading to losses due to early retirement, sick leave, employee accidents, and more. membership and increased premiums.
To combat this problem, ISO has developed a new standard, ISO 45001, Occupational health and safety management systems – Requirements, which will help organizations reduce the burden of the health and safety management profession by providing a framework to improve employee safety, reduce workplace risks, be safer, work better… around the world.
This standard was developed by a committee of experts in occupational health and safety, and follows other common management system approaches such as ISO 14001 and ISO 9001. It references the Standards. other international standards in this area such as OHSAS 18001, ILO-OSH Guidelines of the International Labor Organization, various national standards and ILO international labor standards and conventions.
ISO 45001 builds on the occupational health and safety standard OHSAS 18001 but it is actually a new and different standard, not a revision or an update and will replace OHSAS 18001 in three next year.
The common goal of all organizations is to perform their duties well, safely, and to control occupational accidents and diseases. In other words, organizations will take all measures to eliminate them. , reduce and control occupational health and safety related hazards and risks. Improved productivity starts with ensuring workers work in a safe, healthy environment, preventing work-related injury and illness, and building trust throughout. supply chain operations. Furthermore, this responsibility is becoming increasingly important for brands and corporate reputations.
ISO 45001 is the new occupational health and safety standard of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). It is one of the most anticipated standards in the world and is set to dramatically improve workplace safety.
ISO 45001 will become part of the business standard and businesses will need to keep up with the new requirements for improving workplace safety whether or not an organization chooses to adopt ISO 45001.
What is ISO 45001?
ISO 45001 is a milestone! As the world's first international standard for work health and safety, ISO 45001 Requirements and guidance for use - Occupational health and safety management systems provides a clear structure for all organizations that want to effectively improve occupational health and safety.
This standard focuses on the role of top management and is intended to provide a safe, healthy workplace for workers. To achieve this, it is important to control all factors that can contribute to illness, injury and, in the worst case, death by reducing adverse effects on physical, mental and emotional well-being. the spirit and consciousness of each person. ISO 45001 covers all those aspects.
Although ISO 45001 builds on the OHSAS 18001 occupational health and safety standard, it is actually a new and different standard, not a revision or update and will replace OHSAS 18001 in the next three years. As a result, businesses need to change current thinking and practices to maintain their organization's appropriate occupational health and safety.

Some FAQs about ISO 45001
What are the key differences between OHSAS 18001 and ISO 45001?
There are many differences between OHSAS 18001 and ISO 45001, but the main change is that ISO45001 focuses on the interaction between an organization and its business environment, while OHSAS 18001 focuses on the management of occupational health and safety hazards and other internal problems.
These two standards also have many other differences such as:
• ISO 45001 based on process - OHSAS 18001 based on process/procedure;
• ISO 45001 requirements are flexible - OHSAS 18001 is not;
• ISO 45001 considers both risks and opportunities - OHSAS 18001 only addresses risks;
• ISO 45001 includes stakeholder views - OHSAS 18001 does not. With the ISO 45001 standard, businesses will have to consider occupational health and safety issues and consider the expectations of stakeholders;
• Some enterprises apply OHSAS 18001 and delegate responsibility for monitoring occupational safety and health to safety managers rather than systematically integrating them into business operations. ISO 45001 requires the incorporation of health and safety aspects into the overall management of the enterprise, so top management has a stronger role in this regard.
The above points show a significant change in the perception of how occupational health and safety is managed. Occupational safety and health are no longer "single" issues that must be considered in the operation and sustainability of the organization. Although the two standards differ in approach, a management system built in accordance with OHSAS 18001 is a convenient platform to transition to ISO 45001.
For an organization that is OHSAS 18001 certified, convert to ISO 45001 how?
When transforming, businesses need to "prepare the ground" before the new management system is set up as follows:
1. Conduct an analysis of stakeholders (for example, individuals or organizations that can influence the operation of the enterprise) as well as the internal and external factors that may affect the business of the enterprise, then consider for yourself that these risks can be controlled through the management system. organization's management no.
2. Define the scope of the system.
3. Use this information to establish the organization's processes, assess risks and, most importantly, to establish key performance indicators (KPIs) for the processes.
In case we do not have much access to ISO 45001 standard, what should we do?
The answer depends on your understanding of ISO management systems. ISO 45001 uses Annex SL, thus sharing the same high-level structure (HLS), texts, terms and definitions with recently revised ISO management system standards such as management systems. ISO 9001:2015 quality management system and ISO 14001:2015 environmental management system. If your organization has already adopted these management systems, the structure of ISO 45001 is similar and your organization only needs to include the contents related to occupational safety and health in the system.
In the absence of access or very little, understanding the standard is not as easy as reading a normal book. You must recognize the connection between the terms in the standard. Therefore, it is best to attend a training course or use an ISO 45001 consulting service to assist with implementation.
How to integrate ISO 45001 with the organization's management systems such as ISO 9001 and ISO 14001?
The general structure of the ISO (above above) management system standard has been developed to facilitate the integration of new management aspects into an organization's existing management system. For example, the ISO 45001 standard was developed quite closely with ISO 14001 because we know that many organizations combine occupational health and safety aspects and environmental aspects.
How is ISO 45001 used?
The ISO 45001 standard is expected to be used by most organizations to establish an effective occupational health and safety management system, but only a few need to be certified. Building and maintaining an effective management system will bring many benefits to the organization. The certificate is simply an additional, proof-of-concept to external partners.
The standard requires occupational health and safety risks to be addressed and controlled, and is also based on a risk-based approach to ensure effectiveness and is continually improved to meet the ever-changing "context" of the organization. Furthermore, ISO 45001 always ensures compliance with applicable legislation worldwide. These measures combined can help establish an organization's image as a "safe place to work", providing important benefits, from reducing insurance costs to improving employee morale. - while continuing to meet the organization's strategic goals
