The Fairtrade Premium provides an additional resource that producer organisations can use to support their members and communities. Understanding how it is received, planned, approved and documented is important for cooperatives participating in Fairtrade supply chains.
It is an additional payment associated with Fairtrade sales, separate from the product price. For a small-producer organisation, its use is governed by the applicable Fairtrade requirements and democratic decisions of the organisation's members.
The Premium is not a processor's discretionary profit or a guaranteed increase in each farmer's personal income. Its value depends on eligible sales and the applicable product and trading terms.
Members discuss priorities and approve the organisation's development plan and Premium expenditure through the required democratic process. Clear records connect approved decisions with payments, activities and results.
Product-specific allocation requirements and any restrictions must be checked before committing funds.
Rates are product-specific and may depend on origin, product form, currency, contract timing and other conditions. Use the official Fairtrade Minimum Price and Premium information for an actual contract.
This article uses illustrative examples of USD 0.20 per pound of green coffee and USD 240 per tonne of cocoa. These figures illustrate the calculation method; check the official rate and terms before entering a transaction.
Illustrative calculation: if the applicable Premium were USD 240 per tonne and 200 tonnes were sold on eligible Fairtrade terms, the Premium would be 200 × 240 = USD 48,000. Actual receipts depend on the applicable rate and eligible volume. No exchange-rate conversion or sales volume is guaranteed.
These weaknesses can lead to audit findings and corrective-action requirements, and serious or unresolved noncompliance can affect certification. Good governance and clear evidence should be built into the system from the start.
ITVC supports businesses, farmer organisations and cooperatives in developing practical management arrangements for Fairtrade implementation.
The aim is a democratic, transparent and usable system that supports members' chosen development priorities. Contact ITVC to discuss your cooperative, products and certification objectives.
