The VDA 6.3:2023 edition was published in January 2023.
VDA QMC continues to offer the upgrade from VDA 6.3:2016 to VDA 6.3:2023 as web-based self-study training (ID 384). Course ID 333 is now available only as in-house training.
No. Existing VDA 6.3:2016 certificates remain valid and are extended when they expire.
Companies determine their own changeover timing. For legal reasons, VDA QMC cannot prescribe that date.
The company should agree its transition in line with customer requirements. Auditing to the 2023 edition requires the relevant upgrade training; self-study course ID 384 remains available. Proof of successful completion must be submitted no later than certificate renewal.
The standard initial qualification for both internal and supplier auditors is the four-day course VDA 6.3:2023 — Process Auditor — Qualification (ID 381).
After attendance and successful completion of the knowledge test, participants receive a qualification certificate demonstrating their professional auditor qualification (see VDA 6.3:2023, page 18).
Auditors working for other organizations as external service providers also require VDA 6.3 certification (see VDA 6.3:2023, page 20). Customer-specific requirements may go beyond the volume's requirements and may require a VDA certificate from VDA QMC or an official licence partner, including for internal process auditors. This certificate is obtained through VDA 6.3:2023 — Process Auditor — Examination (ID 382).
The examination comprises an audit simulation. Successful candidates receive a numbered electronic VDA certificate, valid for five years from the examination date.
VDA QMC participants submit an online application after registering for the examination. Admission depends on approval of the application.
VDA QMC licence partners may provide the application in other formats, for example as a PDF downloaded from their website or supplied by email.
No. All prerequisites must be met and the application approved by VDA QMC or an official licence partner before the examination. Submitting the application afterwards is not permitted.
A qualification certificate, or registration confirmation, for VDA 6.3:2023 — Process Auditor — Qualification.
Evidence of at least three days of auditor qualification based on DIN EN ISO 19011, for example a VDA auditor qualification.
Evidence of Automotive Core Tools competence through ID 415:2022 or ID 417:2019, or two days of training with another provider from 2019 onwards together with a passed VDA QMC Automotive Core Tools quiz.
Evidence of at least five years of full-time experience in a manufacturing company, including at least two years in quality-related activities, documented in a tabular CV. Company training periods may be credited where the applicant has at least three years of professional experience.

Auditor qualification based on DIN EN ISO 19011 must total at least three days. The IATF 1st/2nd Party Auditor qualification (ID 211) alone is insufficient evidence of ISO 19011 competence.
No. Audit experience does not replace the required DIN EN ISO 19011 auditor qualification.

The standardized quiz checks and confirms prospective VDA 6.3 auditors' Automotive Core Tools knowledge. A consistent assessment provides internationally recognizable evidence of competence, supports the standing of the VDA 6.3 certificate and strengthens confidence in certificate holders throughout the automotive supply chain.
DIN EN ISO 19011, section 7.6, requires auditors to maintain and develop their competence, including through training. VDA QMC's two-day automotive Core Tools training requirement supports this continuing development.
Where applicants have at least three years of professional experience, preferably in automotive manufacturing, eligible company training periods may be credited.
Such training periods count at 50%, and only for completed dual vocational training or dual studies in a technical occupation at a manufacturing company.
Internships, working-student activities or similar placements within academic bachelor's or master's programmes cannot be credited.
All requirements must be satisfied and the application approved by VDA QMC or an official licence partner before the examination; see questions 6 and 8.
The examination may be repeated at most twice and must be passed within one year of the first examination.
