Introduction to RWS

RWS stands for Responsible Wool Standard.

The Responsible Wool Standard is a voluntary global standard addressing sheep welfare and the land on which sheep graze. It helps farmers respond to the sourcing expectations of retailers and brands through animal-welfare and land-management requirements. Organisations mentioned in the original introduction include H&M, Kering, Patagonia and the Outdoor Industry Association.

Objectives of RWS

RWS provides a way to recognise responsible farming practices, linking wool sourcing to progressive land management and the responsible treatment of sheep.

How does RWS work?

RWS is an independent, voluntary certification standard. At farm level, its requirements address sheep welfare through the Five Freedoms and responsible land management. Chain-of-custody controls identify and track wool from certified farms through production.

The Five Freedoms underpin the protection of sheep welfare, informed by recognised standards and good practices.

Responsible farm management protects soil health, biodiversity and native species.

Supply-chain traceability

The identity of certified wool is maintained through the chain of custody from farm to finished product.

Independent third-party certification bodies assess the applicable stages of the supply chain.

Responsible communication

Use of the RWS logo and product claims must meet the applicable Textile Exchange claims and labelling rules, including certified-wool content, traceability and approval requirements. Certification does not automatically authorise every product claim.

Stakeholder participation

RWS was developed with input from farmers, animal-welfare specialists, land-conservation experts, brands and retailers around the world.

Transition to Materials Matter

September 2026 update: Materials Matter becomes effective on 31 December 2026. Tier 4 organisations certified to RWS may start audits under the new standard from that date; transition becomes mandatory for Tier 4 audits on 31 December 2027. Confirm the applicable transition and claims rules with the certification body.
