SA8000 draws on international human rights instruments, the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and relevant International Labour Organization conventions.
SA8000:2026 is the current edition. Organizations using the 2014 edition should plan their transition with an accredited assessment body; publication of the new edition does not immediately invalidate a 2014 certificate.
The following topics explain the original article’s social accountability framework. They are an introduction, not a substitute for the requirements of the applicable edition.
Prevent child labour and protect young workers. Determine minimum working ages under the applicable standard and law; workers under 18 must not undertake hazardous work. Remediation must protect affected children’s welfare.
Prevent involuntary labour, including coercive prison labour, debt bondage and other forms of forced work.
Address safe operation of machinery; lighting, noise, air, water and soil conditions; workplace temperature and ventilation; routine and periodic health care, including appropriate protections for women; suitable personal protective equipment; fire equipment, instructions and serviceability; evacuation arrangements; and chemical safety information such as safety data sheets (SDS).
Respect workers’ freedom to establish, join and participate in trade unions or other lawful worker organizations and bargain collectively.
Prevent discrimination, including discrimination related to religion, belief, ethnicity, nationality, age or gender.
Use fair disciplinary procedures without physical violence, humiliation, threats or sexual harassment. Decisions on termination or pay must comply with applicable requirements; the existence of a disciplinary procedure does not justify abusive practices.
Control normal working hours, overtime and rest in line with the applicable standard and law. Apply relevant protections for pregnant or nursing workers and other protected groups according to the jurisdiction.
Meet applicable wage and benefit requirements, including relevant social and health insurance obligations.
Establish management responsibilities, accessible grievance channels and procedures to investigate and respond to workers’ concerns without retaliation.
Consider relationships with local residents, organizations and authorities. This is additional stakeholder context, not a separate tenth requirement of SA8000:2014.
