What is ISO/IEC 27001?

ISO/IEC 27001 is the international standard for information security management systems (ISMS), first published in 2005.

An ISMS gives an organization a structured approach to managing information security across people, technology and operational processes. Independent certification can demonstrate conformity within the certified scope to customers, partners and regulators; it does not guarantee that incidents can never occur.

ISO 27001 provides a common foundation for organizational information security policies and effective security management, supporting confidence between organizations.

Who can apply ISO/IEC 27001?

ISO/IEC 27001 is suitable for organizations of any size, sector or location.

It is particularly relevant where information protection is essential, including finance, healthcare, public services and information technology.

Organizations that handle information on behalf of others, such as software outsourcing businesses, can also use ISO/IEC 27001 to demonstrate a systematic approach to protecting customer information.
