IATF 16949 Sanctioned Interpretations: updates and implementation guidance

1. What are IATF 16949 and Sanctioned Interpretations (SIs)?

IATF 16949 is an international standard for automotive quality management systems, developed by International Automotive Task Force (IATF), and based on the structure of ISO 9001 with additional requirements specific to the global automotive supply chain.

Sanctioned Interpretations (SIs) are official supplementary interpretations issued by IATF for requirements in IATF 16949. They clarify, supplement or update how requirements are interpreted and applied and become part of the basis for determining conformity and identifying nonconformities in the quality management system.

2. IATF 16949 SI updates

According to the IATF announcement discussed in this article, the IATF 16949 Sanctioned Interpretations programme includes important new and revised interpretations, effective from November 2025:

• SI 23 was revised, clarifying how the relevant requirement is applied.
• SIs 27, 28, 29 and 30 was were newly issued, adding detailed interpretations of specific IATF 16949 requirements.

IATF also published new Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) to help organizations understand the scope and application of the interpretations.
