Higg FEM Scoring System Guidance

Higg FEM assesses a facility's environmental performance. To interpret results, identify the assessment year, module version and applicable questions. Do not use an older scoring table to calculate current results.

1. Results and scoring structure

Results include a total score, section scores and level achievement. Under Cascale's published FEM 4.0 methodology and FEM 2025 guidance, sections use a 100-point scale and contribute equally to the total. Levels 1, 2 and 3 carry 25%, 50% and 25% respectively, with a separate rule where applicability limits the section to Level 1.

Not all questions are scored. Scoring responses and level advancement depend on the version's applicability logic; “Yes” and “Partial Yes” are not the only possible scoring responses in every case.

2. Data for the seven impact areas

• Environmental management systems: responsibilities, policies, plans and implementation records.
• Energy and greenhouse gases: consumption, energy sources and calculation inputs.
• Water: supply sources, use data and consumption controls.
• Wastewater: generation, treatment and monitoring results.
• Air emissions: emission sources and management measures.
• Waste: classification, quantities, storage and transfer records.
• Chemicals: inventories, safety information and use controls.

3. Reviewing results

1. Confirm the reporting year, facility type and applicable questions.
2. Check responses against records and actual data.
3. Review consistency of units, reporting periods and calculation methods.
4. Distinguish self-assessment results from results verified within the programme's scope.
5. Identify gaps and prioritise improvement actions.

Read scores together with applicability and supporting evidence. Comparisons across years or facilities require consideration of methodological and operational differences.
