Introduction to SA8000
1. What is SA8000?
SA8000 is a social accountability management standard developed by Social Accountability International (SAI). It provides retailers, manufacturers, suppliers and other organizations with an approach to maintaining fair working conditions across their supply chains.
SA8000 combines:
-
Recognized principles concerning workers’ rights.
-
Management system requirements to sustain conformity and continual improvement.
2. Who can apply SA8000?
Organizations of different types, sizes, products and services can apply SA8000. Labour-intensive industries have a particular interest in its approach to working conditions.
It is relevant to organizations seeking to:
-
Demonstrate implementation of their social accountability policies.
-
Demonstrate conformity to interested parties.
-
Obtain independent third-party certification of their social accountability management system.
3. Current edition and transition
SA8000:2026 is the current edition. Organizations using the 2014 edition should plan their transition with an accredited assessment body; publication of the new edition does not immediately invalidate a 2014 certificate.
SAI — SA8000:2026
-
Protection for children and young workers, alongside organizing and collective bargaining rights.
-
Voluntary, fair recruitment, employment and termination; appropriate hours, wages and benefits.
-
Equal treatment, health and safety, and privacy.
-
Ten management criteria address leadership, workers and stakeholders; policies, risks, objectives, resources, implementation, transparency, monitoring, grievances and improvement.
-
During 2026, certification to the 2014 edition remains available under SAI’s transition arrangements; availability of 2026 audits depends on the assessment body’s approval.
-
From 1 January 2027, new certifications and recertifications use the 2026 edition. Existing organizations must complete transition by 31 May 2029.
-
Transition requires a recertification audit, not a surveillance audit. Check SAI’s training and self-assessment requirements before an audit, including the general 31 December 2026 deadline for certified organizations.
