Why conduct a bunker survey?

Shipowners, vessel operators and charterers need to determine the quantity of fuel on board at a particular time and location for purposes such as:

• Vessel handover at the start or end of a charter
• Monitoring vessel fuel consumption for management purposes
• Checking fuel received on board to control bunker purchases

Vessel itineraries change according to cargo availability and transport requirements. Owners, operators and charterers may be unable to send their own personnel to check fuel quantities because of distance, travel costs and time. ITVC Global offers bunker surveys to support these parties.

Survey procedure

1. Inspect vessel condition and collect information: trim, list, loading or discharge status, bunkering activity, fuel tank arrangement, fuel densities and consumption rates for different operating conditions.
2. Measure the vessel’s fuel tanks, including sounding or ullage and temperature.
3. Calculate the quantity of fuel on board at the time of the survey.
4. Prepare the report and issue an inspection certificate.
